Devils Advocate

Three Reasons the Blazers DON'T Make the Playoffs:

1) Well, they're in the WEST... Is there anyone out there who thinks (with the possible exception of the Telfair year) that the Blazer's Playoff streak would have ever ended if they played out East? There's just way too much depth in the conference, and the Blazers have NO margin for error if they want even the 8th spot.

2) They're all a year older... but the team got... younger? It's true. With the additions of Bayless and Batum the Blazers have a younger average age than last year. James Jones' presence will be SORELY missed.

3) Bad Luck. Like it, though most likely not, always has a chance of cropping up it's pockmarked hideous skull. Injuries, miracle shots, bad calls. These are the things you must be good enough that they don't beat you, and the Blazer's have a LOOOOOOOOOOONG history of being in the right place at the wrong time.

  1. Thank you for playing Devil's Advocate.
Here's why you're wrong, which I hope is what you were looking for:

    1) The West is crumbling around the Blazers while they grow like a shield volcano from the ground up until they are as monsterous as you could ever imagine. That growth puts them above at least seven of the Western Conference teams, namely:
    OKC
    Sacramento
    Golden State
    Minnesota
    Denver
    Memphis
    LA Clippers
    ... at least!

    2) This team will have the talent and the group mindset to survive a majority of tough situations, the kinds of situations that you would expect a veteran's presence to help you through. Sure, they'll miss a few opportunities, and that's totally OK. But you'll see growth, and the kinds of veteran decisions you hope to see when dudes are being coaches expertly.

    3) Injuries are a total bummer, and you can see the fear in many of us that this team could have a serious injury in every player. thats the odds, at least, and it applies to every team. But many of our players will make it through the season without messing themselves up, without a serious injury, and with a growth of his game. That also seems to be the odds.
So does hitting as many miracle shots as are hit against them, evidenced by last year. This team will have an entirely new look, I think, simply based on the skills and the solid presence of Greg Oden and LaMarcus Aldridge. Teams win when they have big men to compliment those awesome guards. I expect great things.

By the way, you misspelled "Trail Blazer" in the title of your blog. Is it too late to change it? Or were you going for a twist and turn of a phrase there? Either way, it's cool.

  2. Excellent! I was wondering what it would take to generate some response, and thanks for reading!

Very true. If the Blazers beat the teams under the bubble, also known ad "teams you're supposed to beat" they'll be at least the 8 seed.

Hard to belive OKC is in our conference. An NBA realignment in order?

The Blazers are young, but a Rookie Brandon Roy stood up to the Big Bad Puddin' aka Z Bo.

    Injuries scare me.

Yeah, I did misspell that... I would like to say that it was a cool intentional thing, but... ummm.... yeah. It was a cool and intentional thing. It is the best thing ever.
